Therefore, it’s important to learn the Quran and recite it daily. So, let’s see how can we learn the Quran and memorize it.

Can I Memorise the Quran by myself?

Yes, you can easily learn and memorize the Holy Quran by yourself, you just need to follow a strategy that we will discuss shortly. But here’s a quick tip for you:

The prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said:

“Fasting and the Qur’an will intercede for a person on the Day of Resurrection. Fasting will say, ‘O Lord, I deprived him of food and desires during the day, so let me intercede for him.’ The Qur’an will say, ‘O Lord, I deprived him of his sleep at night, so let me intercede for him.’ Then they will both intercede for him.”

Which surah should I memorize first?

The first surah to start memorizing should be surah al-Fatiha because it is the surah that we read in every Rakah in every prayer. Then move to the other short surahs like surah Ikhlas, surah Falaq, and surah Nas. Then you can memorize longer surahs like Surah Al-Rehman, which is easy to memorize because one of the verses is repeated so many times. Afterward, memorize surah Yaseen and Mulk, are two of the surahs that are a sunnah to read daily before going to bed.

The prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said:

“Read the Quran for it will come as an intercessor for its reciters on the Day of Judgment.”

How long does it take to memorize Quran?

The time it takes to memorize the whole Quran differs from one person to another, to some it might take only one year, while others may take from 4 to 5 years.

It all depends on your free time, how many hours to you free daily to memorize? how often do you memorize? the strategy and plan you made, and so on. It doesn’t matter how long it takes to memorize, what’s important is that you keep going and not let anything stop in your way.

Tips to make memorizing Quran easier.

Here are some tips to help you memorize faster.

1.     Intention.

First of all, you should start by making your Intention that you’re doing this for Allah and not for anyone else. Allah said in the Holy Quran:

“So worship Allaah, making the Deen sincerely for Him. Is it not to Allaah that sincere worship is due?” [Zumar 39:2-3]

Memorizing Quran is one of the greatest things that we could do in our lives, and that gives us many rewards.

He also said:

“It will be said to the companion of the Qur’an: Recite and rise in status, recite as you used to recite in the world, for your status will be at the last verse that you recite.”

2.     Learn how to recite Quran correctly.

Before you start memorizing you should learn how to recite the Quran with tajweed and without any mistakes, or else you will memorize it wrong.

You could do that by listening to your favorite reciter and reading with him from the mushaf, seeing where you get it wrong, and fixing it.

3.     Set your daily limit of Quran memorization.

Don’t push yourself too much just see how much you can memorize every day, perhaps one or two pages a day.

Don’t put an impossible goal or you will get disappointed when you don’t achieve it. And to memorize effectively you should follow the repetition method, keep reciting the verse until you memorize it, then go to the next verse and do the same.

After you memorize the second verse, recite the two verses out loud to ensure you got it, then move to the next verse and repeat the process.

4.     Don’t memorize another part until you’ve perfected the previous one.

If you didn’t memorize the previous part, you memorized yesterday then don’t move to a new one, revise the old part and recite it until you memorize it all. It will be a good idea if you recite the part you have memorized in prayer. If you do so you will never forget the verses.

5.     Understand the verses.

While studying can you memorize information that you don’t understand? Of course not, you will first search for it in order to understand what it means then you will memorize it. The same thing goes for memorizing Quran, you can’t memorize what you don’t understand.

So when you read a verse that you don’t understand its meaning read its Tafseer. And don’t move to the next verse without understanding it or it won’t stuck in your mind. Also when you don’t understand the meaning of a word search for its meaning first. This will make the memorization process of the Quran much easier.

6.     Recite Quran slowly:

The main goal of reciting the Quran is to understand it, read it slowly with care and if you don’t understand the meaning of a verse or word then search for it, don’t skip it.

So, you need to recite slowly, pay attention to every word, and search for the meaning of what you don’t understand. Sit in a quiet and clean place so that no one distracts you. And after you memorize the whole surah start linking its verses together.

7.     Make time for Quran memorization.

To learn how to read the Quran without mistakes you should make time for it in your schedule. Learning Quran recitation needs time and effort from you. If you are not willing to commit, you won’t be able to reach your goal.

8.     Repeat and revise.

To memorize the Quran verses you should at least recite the verse 10 times and then try reciting it without looking. When you make it right move on to the next verse and repeat the process. Then, on the next day don’t start memorizing the new verses, first revise what you learned the previous day to ensure that you didn’t forget it. Also, you should revise all that you have learned once a week.

How to learn the Quran by yourself?

Here’s how you can learn Quran recitation on your own.

1.     Learn Tajweed rules.

To learn how to read the Quran without mistakes the first thing you should do is to learn what is called tajweed rules. It is the rule used to read each letter correctly. The word tajweed itself means beautification, the act of perfecting something.

With tajweed you will learn how to pronounce the words in their right form, as each letter comes out from a part of the mouth, tajweed will help you do so.

The prophet (peace and blessing be upon him) said: “The best among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Quran and teach it.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari).

2.     Listen to your favorite Quran reciter.

To learn the tajweed rules better and be able to read without making any mistakes you should listen to a reciter and read after him. Pay attention to how he reads, when he raises his voice, and when he lowers it.

Listen to how he pronounces each letter and word, the more you listen the better you get. There are many reciters that you could choose from like Saad El Ghamidi, Abdul Rahman Al Sudais, Mishary Rashid Al-Afasy, and Abdul Basit Abdus Samad.

3.     Learn the meaning of the verses.

Try your best to understand each verse you are reading, read the translation of the Quran, and search for what you don’t understand.

4.     Start with Easy Chapters.

Here the goal is to start reading the short surahs first to encourage yourself to keep going especially for beginners. When you manage to read a full surah on your own you will get excited and eager to continue, unlike starting with long surahs.

So, start with the last chapter of the Holy Quran and don’t rush yourself learn slowly and be patient, when you finish the short surahs and you are able to read them correctly this means that you will manage to read the long surahs easily.
